Larger than life floral shapes and vibrant colors invite in the entire historic Hyde Park neighborhood to see the Kate Jackson park as more than just basketball courts.

The design needed to maintain the regulation lines of a traditional court but this court is in the heart of Hyde Park Village with a playground, public art and a water feature so the standard green and white wouldn’t cut it. We wanted to embrace all three aspects of this Park and create a timeless yet playful mural that serves the basketball players, the historic preservation the surrounding neighborhood and the generations of families that played and gathered there.

Challenge of painting a basketball court.

The fourth parameter of the design was not technical. Outdoor courts experience a tremendous amount of wear and tear and the paint required was much thicker and in fewer colors than a wall paint. Lastly, the scale of two full size basketball courts is not something you can just sketch out. We determined the best technique to ensure accuracy was to  create a chalk line grid to use as a reference point. The end result is this one of a kind design fitting of such an iconic park.
