Once More, With Nostalgia

Our GenX Tavern project presented an opportunity for the Pep Rally Inc. team to build both interactive installations and two dimensional artwork to create an environment that celebrates the 1990s. Sourcing ideas from the most iconic pop culture icons of the era, we tackled multiple versions of each installation before arriving on the final renditions. We struck a balance between aesthetic and functionality to immerse GenX Tavern guests in a fun and nostalgic space.

Remixed Media

Our first challenge in creating the TV wall was sourcing functional VCRs and tube TVs that also fit our desired look. We were able to find what we needed by visiting several recycling depots. We then had the technical challenge of assembling the units to stack in a visually cohesive way that allows access to the wiring and other components so the unit can be fully functional. The result is a solid structure that both supports the weight of heavy 90s electronics and presents a wall of media to viewers. For the finish we applied to the structure, we were inspired by pop culture representations of high school life like “Saved by the Bell” and the then common practice of wrapping textbooks in paper.

Source Material

Our development process for designing the infinity mirror included deconstructing smaller models so we could gain an understanding of how they work, but these prototypes lacked the scale we planned for our installation. Our infinity mirror presented new challenges because of its eight by four foot size and the second color we added to create a more dynamic environment. The result is a totally unique product that creates a 90s club feel.
